Text messages are relatively new, quick, and concise means of communication with specific language employment. This paper provides arguments for stylistic distinctness of text messages on several levels of analysis: phonostylistic, morphostylistic, lexicostylistic and syntaxostylistic. Being a mixture of standard and non-standard language features, text messages in Serbian certainly belong to the colloquial functional style. The paper goes further to conclude that text messages also represent a new genre due to the use of English words, abbreviations, emoticons, highly specific tense use and discourse dynamic itself.en_US
