Authors: Matić, Dejan

Issue Date: 2023
Abstract: The paper discusses the general teaching on law by Gligorij Geršić. The name of Gligorija Giga Geršić occupies a significant place, both in the history of Serbian legal science and in Serbian history in general. This prominent legal writer left a lasting mark on the time in which he lived and worked. One of our most prolific legal writers, Geršić is undoubtedly one of the most prominent legal professionals in our country. He published over a hundred works, mostly in the field of international law, civil and Roman law. He is primarily known to the wider professional public as a civilian and an excellent expert on international law, while his theoretical and legal work is much less well known. His main and fundamental work in the field of general theory of law is the Encyclopaedia of Law, despite the fact that Geršić was inclined to consider certain issues that fall into this subject in detail and quite thoroughly in works that do not actually belong to general theory of law. Gligorije Geršić is the creator of the first complete and largely self-contained theory of law in our country, and it, in addition to certain limitations, represents no small success and, without a doubt, the greatest reach of our legal science in that field up to that time.
