Title: EU STANDARDI ZDRAVSTVENE ZAŠTITE U ZATVORIMA
Authors: Sokovic, Snezana
Issue Date: 2023
Abstract: In the last twenty years, there has been recorded an extremely large progress in defining the standards of health protection in prisons. However, the practice of the European Court of Human Rights continues to document cases in which health protection services in prisons are inadequate to the extent that they constitute an act of inhumane and degrading behavior towards the prisoner, while the reports of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment indicate how often states fail to organize and maintain the necessary standards of health protection for persons serving prison sentences. Knowing that in the EU, compared to some other parts of the world, much more attention is paid both to the setting of health protection standards in prisons, and to the control mechanisms of their compliance, does not give reason for optimism regarding the global state of prisoners' health, especially considering the global scope of prison population and the fact that the health of prisoners affects the general public health in many ways.
