In recent years within various media the status surrounding the Serbian language has been viewed as disconcerting. While in some distant parts of the world there has been a rise of interest in the study of Serbian language, the departments for Serbian language (and literature) on a national level have noted a (significant) decline of interest in the studies of the mother tongue. Additionally, there are fewer proofreaders and editors for Serbian language, and a majority of proofreaders and editors point out similar problems and difficulties concerning the Serbian language. The aim of this paper is to: (1) analyze the current state of studies of Serbian language in the country and the world; (2) unify and highlight the opinions of the public, the media and proofreaders and editors that are involved in teaching students; (3) establish what the difficulties are and give suggestions how to alleviate the current situation and improve the status of Serbian language in the future. Attitudes and conclusions presented in the paper are based on quantitative and qualitative data. The data was interpreted in accordance with scientific publications, official decrees, strategic plans, ranking lists from entrance exams in the previous 10 years (studies of the mother tongue at national faculties), newspaper articles and answers from a survey given to proofreaders and editors of the Serbian language.en_US
