| Abstract: | The paper examines the relationship between the Gospel narrative of the Annunciation of the Archan- gel Gabriel to Mary the Virgin (Lk 1, 26 - 38; Mt 1:18) and the corresponding apocryphal (Protojevanđelje Ja- kovljevo, Skazanje Afroditijana Pesrijanca (longer version), Sveštenstvo Isusa Hrista) with literary (Udvorenje arhangela Gavrila devojci Mariji, by Gavril Stefanovic Venclovic, Gavriliada, by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin) texts and the hymnography of the Feast of the Annunciation. In this paper we examine the canoni- cal and apocryphal characteristics of individual figures of the archangel Gabriel (who is variously named as: angel, angel of the Lord, archangel Gabriel, angel of God) and the Mary the Virgin. |
