Abstract: On the basis of current literary-didactic theories, the paper deals with interpreting the novels Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert (How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone) by Saša Stanišić and Verschissene Zeit (Shit Times) by Barbi Marković in university literature classes, and the impact the novels had on acquiring social and historical knowledge about the epoch in question. The course was conducted during the winter semester of the academic year 2023/2024 with third-year students of German studies at the Faculty of Philology and Arts in Kragujevac. The aim of the project was to acquire literary competences and historical knowledge, as well as to adopt a socio-critical approach to literary texts and a socio-critical perspective in understanding the society the students live in, in order to be able to overcome prejudices and taboos by means of literature. The paper presents qualitative research which involved analysing students’ essays on cultural interpretation matrix concerning the 1990s war in former Yugoslavia.
