Abstract: In the paper, the reflexes of the Old Serbian vowel yat are investigated in the letters by Porta’s Serbian office to Dubrovnik. The letters were written from 1430 to 1566 in the scribal offices of sultans Murat II, Mehmed II, Bayezid II, Selim I, and Suleiman I. The performed analysis showed that in the largest number of letters, the Ekavian reflection of yat was recorded, while in the documents of the sultans Selim I and Suleiman I both (i)Jekavian and Ikavian continuants were recorded, mostly used in intitulations, inscriptions, and fossilized date formulas, clearly indicating that in these offices the Old Serbian standard from the time of sultans Mehmed II and Bayezid II is becoming weaker.
