The friction that occurs in the contact between the piston‐cylinder friction pair results in an increase in temperature as well as wear of the elements in contact. The most critical period for the IC engine is the cold start of the engine, while hydrodynamic lubrication has not yet been achieved. In order to reduce the resulting friction and temperatures, the effect of the application of tribological inserts made of magnesium alloy and graphite was numerically examined in the paper. It has been found that the application of tribological inserts significantly contributes to the decrease of temperature compared to the case when there are no tribological inserts. The maximum temperatures that occur cannot be considered dangerous to some extent, taking into account the characteristics of the material. However, the short time period during which the obtained temperature increase is achieved can be problematic from the aspect of impairing the material characteristics.en_US
