Abstract: The paper points out the basic characteristics of criminal law protection of the environment, with an emphasis on the anthropocentric approach to this protection, which in modern times has been supplemented by an ecocentric approach, which means that not only certain human rights in relation to the environment are protected, but also the environment as a good per se. This also implies respect for the principle of sustainable development of the environment, i.e. the use of natural resources for the needs of current generations in a way that does not threaten the ability of these resources to self-renew and self-reproduce, so that future generations can also use them. When providing criminal law protection of the environment, care should also be taken to protect the ability of the environment to self-renew and self-regenerate. That is, the violation or threat to this ability of the environment should be covered by environmental incriminations.
