Abstract: The paper deals with the topic of Charles Simić’s poetics of immanent symbolism of the tangible reality as expounded in the framework of poststructuralist theory by Jacques Lacan. Adhering to the Lacanian notion of operating within the “symbolicˮ, Simić delves into metaphysical issues of human experience, simultaneously disbelieving human capacity to comprehend metaphysics and assigning transcendental meanings to everyday objects. In his revision of the “symbolic”, he stresses the significance of the imaginary standpoint in seeking truth, deducing that it is the paradoxical relativity of reality which makes any truth discernible to experience. While Simić is attracted by the incomprehensibility of metaphysics, it is the nature of the “symbolic” that he frequently ponders on, believing that the poetic desire for alternate meanings erases the cultural or even empirical boundaries established upon objects. Hence, the role of imagination in Simić’s dialectics is to reestablish such a notion of reality which results in pleasure rather than knowledge.
