Authors: Stanković, Vladimir

Issue Date: 2019
Abstract: This paper deals with methods and forms of the negation of culture in Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451. The novel presents the development and change of the main protagonist Guy Montag. By analyzing his developmental path, the paper has shown that mass culture tends to replace high culture on both individual and collective level. In Bradbury’s novel, the various forms of mass culture, like television, create the false feelings of happiness and replace thinking with entertainment, which endangers high culture. The goal of the cultural interpretation of the novel is to point out that high culture can survive in spite of constant strivings to minimalize its presence and to reduce its effects, which can be perceived in our contemporary society.
