Abstract: Contrastive studies in the field of direct and indirect speech have mostly dealt with problems of trans- lating different types of reporting character’s speech/thoughts from English to Serbian language (Karavesović 2010, Zečević 2013). These studies have provided a valuable insight into the complex relationship between the two languages, whose syntactic rules for reporting character’s speech differ, which frequently causes structural shifts in the translated text (Karavesović 2010: 46). This paper investigates whether structural and/ or stylistic shifts occur when free indirect speech and free direct speech (as well as their subtypes) are trans- lated from Serbian to English language and, if so, what are the characteristics of such shifts. Focus will be on the cases where the character’s speech is reported in the first person as well as on the orthographic changes that occur in the translated text.
