Abstract: The paper treats the phenomenon of the characters I in Meša Selimović's novel Death and the Dervish. Since the narration in the novel comes from the main characters perspective, the dissociation of his I is the testimony of the complexity of his worldview, most notably to the conflict between the principle of action and the principle of contemplation. Owing to the representation of the dissociation of the hero's consciousness, Selimović gained an opportunity to shed light from the modern perspective on the complexity and depth of ethical contradictions which stand as the fundamental feature of Ahmed Nuruddin's inner world.
