Authors: Božanić, Zoran
Issue Date: 2008
Abstract: Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev's artistic and scientific engagement was to greatly influence the development of the Russian musical culture. His opus contains various genres reflecting a wide specter of influences - ranging from the Renaissance Traditions to the artistic tendencies of his time. Taneyev was a pianist as well, whose performance, besides bearing the qualities of a virtuoso and that of extreme musicality, is also to be attributed a rational component. He greatly contributed to the development of higher music education in Russia of the time. Taneyev's scientific engagement deserves special attention. His research of the Renaissance vocal polyphony yielded the following works: Imitative Counterpoint in Strict Style and Sequel on Canon where a fully developed theoretical system of imitative counterpoint was meticulously constructed.
