Abstract: This paper presents the simultaneous optimization of the depths of the horizontal roof overhangs for the retrofit of a residential house for house operation during cooling season. The overhangs are made by using reinforced concrete. The optimization objective is to minimize the sum of the primary operative energy consumption during the overhang lifecycle and the embodied energy in the roof overhangs. The house is located in Belgrade, Serbia. The overhangs face north, south, east, and west. For the optimization, Hooke-Jeeves method is used with GenOpt code. The EnergyPlus software is used to simulate energy behaviour of the house. The depths for east and west facing optimized overhangs are longer than that for the south facing optimized overhang. The north facing overhang almost does not exist. The optimized overhangs during the cooling season may achieve savings in the total energy consumption by 3.20% when compared to the custom overhangs.
