Abstract: This study investigates phrasal verbs with the particle off (off-Phr.Vs) and their Serbian equivalents in terms of the verb aspect and Aktionsart. The phrasal verbs were taken from The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster. Initially, we extracted 73 instances of verb + particle combinations, which were reduced to 58 based on Darwin & Grey’s seven-test classification (1999). The main results indicate that off-Phr.Vs are normally translated by Serbian perfective verbs. In terms of telicity, the particle off normally marks a telic Aktionsart. However, when the inanimate subject was combined with the (off-Phr.Vs) meaning ‘in such a way as to be separated’, the (off-Phr.Vs) illustrated states – atelic verb situations. When it comes to Serbian, perfective verbs are also telic and Serbian perfective prefixes mark telicity in the same way the particle off does – by changing a ‘-goal’ to the ‘+goal’ component of the verb. However, in Serbian, telicity is primarily expressed lexically, whereas in English, it can be expressed on the level of syntax as well, by adding a definite direct object. To conclude, these results refer to the said corpus, thus further research is needed to consider the observed tendencies a rule.
