Abstract: In this article, we analyze the translation techniques of fifteen neologisms coined by the Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno in his four prose works. From a broader corpus, we selected representatives of several subgroups of neologisms for translation analysis ‒ simple words, derivatives formed through prefixation and suffixation, imperative compounds, and semantic neologisms. The analysis shows that the translation employs techniques of generalization, descriptive translation and paraphrasing, where the neologism is not maintained in translation, which leads to a loss of expressiveness of the original text, the standardization of the translated text, and the weakening of the key signifiers network in the text. Translators sometimes use different techniques to translate the same neologism within the same work, and when the neologism is retained in the target language, they often follow the word-formation pattern from the original. We also noted an inconsistency while transmiting the graphical marking of neologisms.
