Abstract: | This paper analyzes the images in textbooks for German as a foreign language for the first, second, third, and fourth years of high school with textbooks Direkt 1, Direkt 2, Direkt 3, and Direkt 4 serving as the corpus. Based on previous research findings that demonstrate the necessity of using iconic means in textbooks for successful learning and teaching, this study aims to examine the representation of iconic elements in textbooks for German as a foreign language, as well as the percentage of visual materials that perform the functions of reinforcement, embellishment, summarization, elaboration, and comparison. The results were obtained through quantitative content analysis of the textbooks and are presented in tabular form as percentages. The research revealed that, despite the high degree of illustration in the textbooks, the majority of the visual elements primarily serve the functions of reinforcement and embellishment. Visual elements of reinforcement partially contribute to language learning, while decorative images serve purely aesthetic purposes. The greatest shortcoming identified is the insufficient presence of visual materials that stimulate the acquisition of new knowledge, while the percentage of those that do not enhance the learning process remains high. |
